Definitions of New Zealand Barn and Free Range layer hen farming

Home » Latest News » Media Statements » Definitions of New Zealand Barn and Free Range layer hen farming

There are published definitions of free range and barn layer hen farming in New Zealand.

The standards are based on the Animal Welfare (Layer Hens) Code of Welfare 2012. These guidelines were created by the National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee (NAWAC) – an independent panel of animal welfare experts appointed by the government. The NAWAC (National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee) consists of members from various organisations including the New Zealand Veterinary Association, the SPCA, and academic experts.

These definitions and standards must be adhered to by every commercial layer hen farm in New Zealand. Every farm has a copy of the standards and also the Animal Welfare (Layer Hens) Code of Welfare 2012.

A summary of the definitions is available on this link: EPF Minimum Standards Barn & Free Range
